On Sunday, 11 May, New Stagers hosted our “Cash Amore” scratch night, inviting our community to perform if they were brave enough!
We had a great range of performances, including stand-up comedy, spoken word poetry, improv, a play read-through, and live music. Two members of our audience were also sufficiently inspired to sign up for the wild card spots and delivered poems and a song off the cuff. The evening culminated in a very popular medley of songs from High School Musical, which got the whole audience singing along.
Cash Amore provided both New Stagers members and our wider community with the opportunity to experiment with different types of performances, and we were delighted to welcome several new performers to the stage. We’re hoping to recreate the success of the scratch night with future similar events, focused on widening our reach and scope.
What Did Our Performers Say?
“It was a great opportunity to try doing something I had not done before. The audience was very supportive and engaging, and I had a blast! 10/10 would do it again” - Alex, stand-up comedian
“It was a treat to reunite our improv troupe. We had such a fun night with a very supportive crowd, I loved being a rocking chair!” - Molly, improv troupe member
“I’m proud of myself for getting up and performing. Reading poems you’ve written out to an audience can be nerve-wracking, but the crowd was great! It was lots of fun. I also really want to thank the group for organising this event and giving people the opportunity to share their range of talents” - Veronica, spoken word poet
“It was an exhilarating experience for me to perform in front of a great crowd and the other excellent performers. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Might have to bring out my inner George Michael…” - Mark-Anthony, wild card performer
“Never did I think that an off-the-cuff suggestion to sing High School Musical would result in a closing act for the Midsummer fundraiser. But from the first rehearsal to the performance itself, it was an absolute blast; to see the smiles on everyone’s faces, hearing the laughter, and having the incredible Charlotte singing beside me was one of the highlights of my year so far!” - Joe, one half of the High School Musical double act.
What Are We Doing It For?
We organised Cash Amore to raise money for our Edinburgh Fringe project and it was a great success, with over £280 raised through ticket sales and tips. All the funds will go towards the costs of taking A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the Edinburgh Fringe, including venue costs, accommodation, advertising, insurance and other admin costs.
If you missed scratch night, you can still be part of our Edinburgh journey by donating to our fundraiser: https://gofund.me/f1e21d55
