Original writing

What is Scene Unseen?
For those of you new to the group, Scene Unseen is a New Stagers production that we put on every year as part of the Wandsworth Fringe. Scene Unseen is made up of a selection of short original plays that have been written, directed and performed by New Stagers. It is a stripped back performance with minimal set, props or costume, where we let the writing, acting and directing do the talking. To date we have had three very successful runs with plays from all genres, including a musical last year!

How do I get involved?
This year, we are looking for 6 original new plays to make up Scene Unseen 2019.

If you have always wanted to give writing a go, this is the perfect opportunity to put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) and have a go at writing in a safe, supportive and friendly environment. Many of our previous performances were made up of plays written by first time writers who had never considered writing a short play before.

It is an open theme so you can be as bold as you like and let your imagination run wild but we ask you to please keep to the following guidelines:

  • Your play should be no longer than 15 minutes.

  • There is a 5 actor limit

  • You must submit a finished script.

  • Material must be the writers own/original stories (we don't want to get sued!).

Remember this is stripped back, no lighting/minimal set so consider your staging when you write your play.

What happens next?
If you are keen to enter a play for consideration for 2019, the submission deadline is Thursday, 31st January 2019. An impartial panel made of New Stagers members (not us) will then be selecting the 6 plays and we will be contacting playwrights on the 17th February to let you know if you've been successful. All plays should be submitted via email to this address ( We ask that scripts do not contain the name of the playwright so they can be submitted to the panel anonymously. The panel will then be selecting plays based on a number of criteria including the 6 which most compliment each other and fit within our guidelines above.

What if my play doesn't get chosen?
As Scene Unseen has grown in popularity we have become slight victims of our own success and while we would love everyone's play to be part of Scene Unseen, we also need to ensure we can invest the right amount of love and time in the production, which is why we have to have a 6 play limit. However, we want to encourage all new writing and give it a chance to flourish and grow so we will also be holding a new writing workshop next year, allowing all authors to see their plays brought to life by the group, receive friendly constructive feedback and have an opportunity to continue to develop their ideas. This is how Scene Unseen was born and as some of the first writers/founders of Scene Unseen, we can't stress how valuable this day actually is, as it can help develop ideas and help us all grow in confidence as writers... plus it was great fun!
