"A writer's only duty is to his story. Not to his country, not to his government, not to his family, not to his friends, not to his readers, not even to himself. His story."
Martin McDonagh's 'The Pillowman' is a darkly comic, at times unsettling, yet thought-provoking show. Much like the writer, each character's duty is clear... so who is up to the challenge of bringing these complex characters to life?
New Stagers is delighted to introduce the cast bringing this surreal world to the stage.
![]() Will Robertson Katurian | ![]() Charlie Dybell Michal |
Will’s career as an actor began in New Zealand, with highlights including roles in television’s Girl vs. Boy and feature films Fresh Meat and Atomic Falafel. Will was drawn to the darkly comic script of The Pillowman and has loved taking on the role of Katurian, exploring the themes of authoritarian control, censorship and disturbing dystopian rule. Just a bit of light escapism from the real world. | The Pillowman is Charlie’s return to the stage after a break from acting. Having trained in theatre and performing arts, he last performed in shows with The KL Players in Malaysia, whilst working in his day job as a primary school teacher. Charlie was drawn to the role of Michal for his innocence and the complex relationship between him and his brother. |
![]() Leon Dixon Ariel | ![]() Stephan Mirré Tupolski |
This is Leon’s first ever production since studying drama at college. He’s been eager to get back into acting, and the role of Ariel fits the previous parts that he has enjoyed bringing to life. | ‘The Pillowman’ is Stephan’s first show with New Stagers. He loves playing comedic roles or villainous characters (or a combination of both). His previous productions include ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Julius Caesar’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ at Questors Theatre, ‘Arden of Faversham’ at the RSS and ‘A Dream Play’ at Tower Theatre. Apart from ‘The Pillowman’, Stephan is currently working on his one-man horror comedy ‘Dead End Job’ for the GrimFest 2025. |
![]() Molly Rose Jesus Girl | ![]() Liz Ashford Mother |
Molly plays Jesus. | Liz has been a member of New Stagers for 8 years. She has performed in comedic roles in Noel Coward’s Tonight at 8:30, to more dramatic parts in Hamlet. Liz also recently directed The Vagina Monologues and loves to write in her spare time. |
![]() Colin Sheehan Father | |
Colin is a seasoned New Stager, having joined the group in 2013. His most recent roles include Birdboot in 'The Real Inspector Hound' and the iconic, regret-filled Marley in 'A Christmas Carol'. Long a fan of Martin McDonagh, he is looking forward to being part of his darkly comic world. |
'The Pillowman' centres on Katurian, whose story unfolds in a totalitarian state, exploring themes of censorship, storytelling, and the responsibility of the artist in a disturbing and darkly comedic way.
The show takes place from 09 - 12 July at Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre!
