| Steel Magnolias - Assoicate’s reviews – thank you to Lisa and Vera for their comments | ||||
I thoroughly enjoyed the production- even at the end when I was almost sobbing and my nose was running. People were approaching me afterwards to complement me on the amount of tears shed- I equate each tear to a moment savoured! Even though I had seen and loved the film years ago, every actress rose to the challenge and made her part her own. Of course, as Sue (“M’Lynn”) is my best friend I thought that she was terrific and I definitely think that she should wear more shoulder pads when away from the stage. It was good to see a new member of the group take the part of Annelle, which I thought she did with just the right mix of charm/ tremulousness/ religious fervour. All of the other “old hands” were of course their usual great selves. I did like the studio stage as it lent a real intimacy to the many emotional moments and I particularly liked the easy access bar with its half pints of wine! I should also say that I loved the interval music and “Can’t fight the Moonlight” by Leann Rimes especially- reminds me of that other great work for talented female actresses, “Coyote Ugly”. Keep up the great work NSTC! Lisa Stewart Congratulations! Steel Magnolias was brilliant. Very well delivered, produced and performed, with a well designed set and really excellent casting. I didn’t at first warm to M’Lynn’s character but she stole the show in the final act with a perfect portrayal of the agony of a bereaved mother. I cried with her, as my only daughter died 3 years ago. Although I am a life time devotee of thrillers “The Haunting of Hill House” failed to thrill me, and partly to blame, was my long time dislike of the Wimbledon Studio Theatre. So I am delighted that the next two New Stagers productions will be back at the St Anne’s Hall where, for me, they will always belong. Like the song says “they go together like Love and Marriage and a Horse and Carriage”. Vera Catton
