NODA Review by John Huckle

Summary
This is a well constructed story of the goings on backstage at a pantomime with some very funny dialogue. The central characters are two Pantomime Dames one of who's pasts catches up with him in an unexpected way. This was a very entertaining production with plenty of action and sharp dialogue. Once again the Club made use of excellent costumes and set. Congratulations to the Club and the show's directors Sara Stickland and Mark Stannett.

Report
The show is the story of the backstage histrionics of a Pantomime dame who's past catches up with him in an unexpected way. The dialogue is sharp, the story sound and to all those people who have ever experienced backstage life it was very lifelike.

The stars of the show are Bella and Donna, Keith Barnes and Tim Sutton respectively who provide the quick fire humour and great characterisation as camp Pantomime Dames. Tim's three minute transformation into Donna was fantastic to see, as was Keith's accompanying monologue. They were both very convincing and very funny.

The Fan played by Mark Stannett was a very sad character who suddenly changes, firstly into a fan actually acting out his fantasy, then into a gun totting madman and finally with the play's denouement a quite happy chap. This was all conveyed by Mark with skill and determination, particularly the singing.

The supporting roles (Baron, Paul Checkley; Buttons, Andrew Pickup; Prince, Lesley Tulley; Stage Manager, Caroline Meer; Policeman, Mike Ainsworth; Musical Director, Natassa Mantani; and Pianist, Polly Glass) were all first class but are really just there to provide ammunition for Bella and Donna.

The set was easily up to your high standards, the props were excellent and the costumes were particularly good. There was not a glitch in the technical aspects of the show. Lighting, sound and stage management were all spot on, even Poochy was well behaved.

It was pleasing to see that your directors did not fall into the easy trap of over egging either the campness of the characters or the positioning of their humour. Not easy - well done.

The Front Of House team were attentive and well presented, as was the catering team. I thought your handbill and programme were once again simple yet striking. I noticed that the programme included information on the Club, which I think adds to the audience's enjoyment of the show.

The only thing that I was sad about was that the show was over so quickly. I'm sure that the finale could be extended with additional songs and some good old audience participation. I had a most enjoyable evening, congratulations to your directors Sara Stickland and Mark Stannett. I look forward to your next show.
